Broad Peak Avalanche in Pakistan: Remembering Nirmal Purja and the Mountaineers Lost

The Avalanche in Broad Peak, Pakistan: What Happened on July 30,2026 ? 

On July 30, 2026, an avalanche on Broad Peak, Pakistan, saddened and shocked climbers from around the world. A large avalanche occurred on the mountain, killing several climbers.

Broad Peak

Broad Peak is 8,051 meters high. It is considered the 12th-highest mountain in the world and is located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

Timeline of the Avalanche

One of the most sorrowful avalanche incidents happened on Broad Peak with no survivors. At around 9:30 a.m. local time on July 30th, 2026, the avalanche struck the 10 elite climbers on the section of the mountain between Camp 2 and Camp 4.

Having no time to react to the avalanche, all the highly skilled climbers were killed.  Among the ten people who died was Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims Purja, who was a very experienced climber. 

Search and Rescue Operations

On July 31, 2026, after 24 hours of not being able to contact any of the climbers, a search and rescue operation was put in place. The Pakistan Army aviation helicopters and ground rescue teams immediately started their search for the missing climbers.

 

Later that day, rescuers and drones were able to locate signs of the climbers. It was said that the climbers' satellite GPS trackers had recorded their rapid fall of several hundred meters. The rescuers had to take a long time to find everyone due to the bad weather and high altitude. 

Confirmation of the Climbers' Deaths

A search party was launched on July 31st. Still, when rescuers recovered their bodies from the base of the avalanche, they were only able to recover seven bodies and were unable to confirm their identities. On August 1st, an Elite Exped team confirmed the deaths of all the climbers.

The Broad Peak incident shocked the world, killing all climbers, leaving no survivors. In the experienced group, there were six Nepali, one American, one Omani, one Chinese, and one Pakistani climber. All of whom were highly skilled climbers.

Who Was Nims Purja?

Nims Purja is widely known as someone who has earned much respect from many climbers for accomplishing what many thought impossible. 

Early Life and Military Career

Born in Nepal, where he was surrounded by many of the world's highest mountains. Later in his life, he joined the British Army as a Gurkha while also being a British mountaineer. He also served in an elite Special Boat Service unit.

Nims Purja became widely known for scaling 14 different peaks around the world that are more than 8,000 meters tall in just 189 days, setting records that were once deemed impossible. There is also a documentary about him produced by Netflix called “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” 

Legacy in the Mountaineering Community

Many people all over Nepal were very proud of him since he had shown how strong and determined Nepali climbers can be. Nims Purja was trying to become one of the first people to climb all of the fourteen eight-thousanders three times each and to climb all fourteen twice without bottled oxygen.
