A Note on Packing

For your international flights, we recommend that you pack all your equipment in your two duffle bags. Do not simply pack your backpack (since the straps can be damaged by the baggage handling machines). It is important to lock these bags for their trip. Depending on the airport, you may be able to put your travel locks on after TSA has searched the bags. If not, Lock the bags with Zip Ties. If the TSA cuts off the zip-tie to search your bag, they will replace it. You will still need the travel locks to lock your bags in the hotel and during the expedition. Generally, you will take one duffel up to Base Camp, and leave one in the hotel in Kathmandu with your belongings for your time in the city. Your trek in duffel will only be accessible in the evenings (with items such as changes of clothing, sleeping bag), and your day pack will hold vitals such as water, layering, blister kit, and camera.

Trip preparation in Kathmandu.Today we also get to know our climbing Sherpas and guide  as well as fellow climbers. Our climbing Sherpa will   will check our equipment(s) to make sure for one last time to get us ready for our adventure. This step will also ensure that if any equipment are missing  Overnight in Kathmandu.

Our journey begins   with  long drive (10-12 hours  ) drive from Kathmandu to Phaplu the traditional starting point for treks into the Khumbu region in years gone byThis driving is a little bit long from the Kathmandu. You can see the best view of the green valley.  (Optional if you don’t want to drive to  Phaplu you can get a short flight from  Kathmandu . But the flight to kathmandu is only available for limited days of the week. Our journey begins with the long drive to Phaplu, the traditional starting point for treks into the Khumbu region in years gone by. From Phaplu we hit the trail for a brief hike through forest and along a series of stone steps to Nunthala, our first rest top on the trek, imagining along the way what it must have been like

Leaving Phaplu early in the morning 4 to 6 hours off road drive takes us to Kharikhola. Today, we turn away from the Everest Trail (which heads uphill to Bupsa and the Khari La). Instead, we head in a south-easterly direction, following a straightforward and at times zig-zagging trail which gains height steadily and takes us close to Lenjikharka. We reach our overnight halt at the village of Panggom (2850m) in time for a late lunch at our Sherpa’s house. Overnight

We begin our trek after breakfast. After trekking out of Panggom, we cross the Panggom La pass(Lapcha Danda) Then we ascend, walk on a steady path and turn north. We cross Peseng Kharka Khola first then after walking for sometime, reach Peeng Kharka Danda. We cross Ningsow Khola (stream) before reaching the Ningsow Village. Overnight in Ningsow.

From Ningsow, we climb first then descend for a while and climb some more to reach Ramailo Danda. From here we get extraordinary views of Mera Peak and Salpa. After ascending and descending on our trail, we enter the Makalu Barun National Park. Our trail from here to Chhatra Khola is called Pasang Lhamu trail. On the way, if we are lucky, we might even come across the elusive Red Panda. Overnight

We walk towards the north on the main trail to Mera Peak. After walking on a trail next to the the Majang Khola, we merge with another trail which moves alongside the Hinku Khola. Our trail moves straight ahead towards Tashing Ongma which has seasonal tea shops. We continue our trek and cross the bridge over the Sanu Khola before reaching Kothe. Overnight in Kothe.

Today we will enter Barun National Park on this day. Leaving our camp in Khote early in the morning, we will proceed and enter to Barun National Park. The trail leads us along the edge of Hinku Khola in shadow of Mera Peak  about 4-5 hours to lead us to Thagnag which will greet us with awe-inspiring views of Thamserku, Kusum Kangru and Kangteka peaks. we pass a 200-year-old Lungsumgba Gompa where we can find Mera Peak scripted in rock along with its route to reach Mera. Overnight in Thaknak.

Leaving Thaknak, we follow the lateral moraine of Dig Glacier to Dig Kharka, which offers spectacular views of Charpate Himal. The trail climbs through moraines to the snout of the Hinku Nup and Shar glaciers, and then climbs more steeply to Khare. From here, we can see the northern face of Mera Peak which will be an amazing experience.  Overnight at Khare.

Today we  have a separate day set aside solely for acclimatization and basic training just to prepare ourselves better for the Mera Peak climb. You will receive a pre-climb training from our climbing Sherpa guide on this day. You will get instructions on peak climbing techniques. You will also be taught how to use the climbing gears like ice axe, crampons, harness and ascender properly. You will learn how to use ropes while you move up and down. So, even an amateur with no prior experience of peak climb can also participate in Mera Peak Climbing. We will head to the top of Mera Glacier and practice using our climbing gears. Later, in the evening we will return to Khare for overnight stay.

Journey continues along glacier for most of the day. The trail takes us close to the northern section where there are no crevasses. Mera La stretches south to meet the lofty sweep of Mera glacier which drops down from Mera Peak. We will stay overnight either at Mera la or Mera BC

From Mera Base Camp, we will walk further on from the High Camp which lies at the elevation of 5800m. This day presents breathtaking experience of eye-catching views of enormous mountains which is more or less 7000 meters including Makalu (8475m), Everest (8848m), Chamlang (7290m), Baruntse (7220m), Lhotse (8501m) etc. We will also get to see the peaks like Ama Dablam, Kantega, Cho Oyu and more set on the west side. As we get to the High camp (5800m), we will set our camp. Overnight at tented at camp

Our Sherpas  will wake you up at about 2 am with hot tea and we all will have a high energy meal before starting the summit ascent of Mera Peak.We will wake up much early on this day. After tea, we will take a slow climb towards the summit. The temperature remains on an average 10 degree Celsius below Zero on this region. We will climb the glacier and proceed to snow hump-back ridge. We will follow the non-technical and classic route through the south-east ridge. Climbing further through the snout of the glacier, we will climb over the south summit to the summit ridge. Finally, the moment comes for which all of us were eagerly waiting. We will get the 360-degree views of many eight thousand meter peaks including views of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Lhotse and other peaks and mountains. We will spend some time on summit witnessing the views before we descend to the foothill of Mera and reach Mera La from where we will continue our walk till we reach Khongma Ding

There is no guarantee that we will have favorable weather on our planned day for the summit. Therefore, this day is set aside as a contingency in case we are unable to summit the Mera on the desired day due to bad weather conditions or any other unanticipated reason. However, if the trip goes smoothly, this day will not be required.

We head up into the upper yak pastures of this incredible remote valley. All morning the great flanks of Chamlang dominate our left, and the spire of Baruntse comes into view beyond. The terrain is remarkably benign, especially considering we are actually heading directly into the very epicenter of the highest group of mountains in the world. The valley floor remains broad and straight, only gradually rising to the blind alley of peaks ahead. It is almost a shock to realize that the two majestic mountains we are heading straight towards are none other than Everest and Lhotse. Seto Pokhari means White Lake, the water in the lake is white may be due to ice conditions.  Overnight in camp at Seto Pokhari.

This is one of the remotest parts of the Himalayas, so we rarely see any trekkers en-route except if it is a very high tourist season. From Seto Pokhari we move ahead and pass through several lakes that occupy the upper Hunku Basin. After walking past Hunku Pokhari, our trail is next to the magnificent Hunku Glacier. We continue further with another lake close by to our trail. Overnight in Amphu Labcha Base Camp.

Today, we have a real day of challenge ahead of us. On the South side the pass is an interesting traverse of scree slopes and layered glacier wall that we have to ascend. We trek along a fantastic icefall to the crest of the pass at 5850m. Here we have stunning views of Island Peak, Lhotse and Nuptse looming over the Imja Valley. We cross the Amphu Labcha La pass (5,845m) then walk across the Amphu Labcha Glacier. Lhotse Shar Glacier and Imja Glacier are nearby. Our trail also half circles the Imja Tsho lake before walking on the main Island Peak trail. Moving further ahead, we are also in the vicinity of the Ama Dablam Glacier before reaching Chhukung. Overnight in Chhukung. 9-10 hours

Casual & rest day and explore  Chukung valley

After breakfast we will pack up our gear and tents so it can be transported to Island peak high camp. We will rest in the morning and re-hydrate, stock up on more water and after an early lunch and make the 4-5 hour hike up to Island peak high camp at 5,500m/ 18,045ft. It is important to rest, sleep, drink plenty of water and get your gear ready for going to the summit .

Island Peak Ascent. The push for the summit starts very early in the morning, mostly it starts before 3 a.m. in the morning. We climb the rock gully, (grade 1 scrambling) but there are several short rock steps, before we emerge on the right side of the gully. We then follow the steep ridge line leading to the traverse onto the snout of the glacier. We need to rope up to the glacier as it contains many crevasses, this can be take time depending on the route, there is some climbing and jumaring (depending on the year) before coming out onto the glacier.A steep long ascent finally ends at the top and after a short stay at the top to enjoy the panorama of mountains; we climb down to Island Peak Base Camp then Chhukung village

This contingency day has been kept to make sure that our schedule will go on smoothly without interruption even if there occur complications while climbing the peak.

We begin today’s trek very early in the morning to reach the highest part of the entire trip which is Kongma La pass. The top of the pass is marked by cairns and Buddhist prayer flags. The final descent from the pass is the most difficult part of today’s journey. After climbing the moraine on the far side, the trail turns north through Khumbu Glacier which takes us to Lobuche. Overnight at Lobuche.

Note:Trekking through Kongma La is optional. If we do not want to tackle the strenuous Kongma La pass today and want to go directly to Lobuche from Chhukung, we can do that too.

After a short climb through meadows, look down at the Khumbu glacier. Straight ahead is Kalapattar – the best vantage point to view the entire south face of Mt. Everest and the surrounding peaks. After a couple of hours we will get to Gorekshep. Alternatively, we can visit Kala Patthar today instead of the next day as many believe that the sunset view from Kala Patthar is more stunning than the sunrise view.

We start our trek to Kala Patthar early in the morning in order to catch remarkable views of the first light of the sun shining on Mt. Everest. However, we need to be prepared for trekking in the dark and cold temperature (the temperature varies according to the season). Furthermore, there is always a chance for chilly winds which are quite common. As we continue our trek, familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse, Everest and Nuptse tower above us. After several hours of ascent, we will be on the top of Kala Patthar. The close-up view of Mt. Everest and other Himalayan peaks from Kalapathar is amazing. We enjoy the stunning Himalayan vista and descend to Lobuche where we stay the night.

We will relax in the morning, pack everything up and move slowly the high camp.  The hike up to Lobuche high camp will take 2 to 3 hours. There is an amazing mountain views on all sides as you move higher up the mountain.

We wake up early today at around 12 to 1 am and have our breakfast before beginning our climb. It is important we reach the summit before noon because in the afternoon the strong winds in the high lands might become a barrier for a successful summit.  It takes about ten hours to reach the summit. We can see the panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Tawache, Cholatse, Pumori, Changri and more from the peak. After a safe climb to the peak, we slowly make our way down to Pheriche. Overnight

Easy walk along the Imja Khola, short climb to Tengboche, descend Pungki Thanka and complete steep to Kyangjuma, and easier trail to Namche. Overnight. We will be back below 3,500m/ 11,483 feet and you will feel much better and possibly the time to enjoy a beverage at cafe danfe and celebrate, but not too much as we have a long walk back to Lukla the following morning.

The trail descends steeply downward so we need to walk cautiously as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After crossing the suspension bridges over the fast flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries, the trail becomes more level and natural. After our arrival in Lukla, we stretch those sore legs and recall the experiences and enjoy with the crews . Overnight in Lukla.

Today, we   catch a early morning flight to Kathmandu after our long mountain journey. We can rest and relax throughout the day in Kathmandu at your hotel. Casual day for shopping  some gifts home from Nepal for friends and relatives, we can visit to some nearby shops or venture out in Thamel for authentic Nepalese goods.
